A sway bar also called an anti-roll bar connects the left and right suspension corners through a torsional spring that resists the body roll generated during cornering. When the car corners, weight transfers to the outside wheels and the body rolls away from the corner. The sway bar transfers some of this load back to the inside wheel, keeping both suspension corners working more evenly and reducing the angle of body roll. A stiffer sway bar produces less body roll for a given cornering load the car stays flatter through corners, the suspension geometry changes less, and the driver experiences more predictable, communicative handling. The front and rear sway bars work together to define the car’s handling balance: a stiffer front bar increases understeer tendency; a stiffer rear bar increases oversteer tendency. The correct combination is determined by the chassis balance goals of the build.
